Pre-school gymnastics helps develop basic skills in movement; skills that play an essential role in everyday life, as well as underpinning future development in sport skills. The classes are designed to develop core skills such as balance, strength, spatial orientation and coordination and provide the children with the motivation of earning rewards in the form of badges and certificates (examples of the award criteria is available as a download at the bottom of the page). The children also gain life skills through the discipline of taking turns and sharing as well as developing friendships with their fellow gymnasts. All of our coaches are British gymnastics qualified and have enhanced CRB checks completed prior to employment.
Children under the age of 11 must be accompanied to their sports lesson by their parent or guardian. Children attending lessons will not be released from our care in the absence of their parent or guardian; we would therefore strongly advise that you remain on site incase of any emergency so we can contact you quickly and that you arrive at least 5 minutes prior to the end of your child’s lesson.
1 Year Old Class (Parent assisted)
This class has a full apparatus layout including trampettes, balance beams, soft play shapes, bridges, tunnels and bars as well as an extensive range of hand apparatus. It is designed to allow children to explore and become familiar with apparatus and equipment through play. Each class finishes with 15 minutes of parachute games. children in this class will have the opportunity of completing the first stages of our Pre – school gymnastics award scheme.
2 Year Old Class (Parent assisted)
This class is more structured focusing on more difficult skills requiring instructor support. Classes start with instructor led warm up games followed by work on specific pieces of hand and foot apparatus including balls, tap sticks, target throwing, balancing, catching and kicking skills as well as skills on larger apparatus including beams, bars, trampette and rolling wedges. Each class finishes with parachute games or action songs. Children will work from the British Gymnastics fundamental award scheme.
3 Year Old Class
This class has a smaller ratio of 1 coach to 8 children. The circuits are smaller so that children can focus on improving their fine and gross motor skills. Children will complete some skills supported by the coach with a view to achieving these independently and will work on other skills with hand and foot apparatus as part of a small circuit. Children will work from the British Gymnastics independent award scheme.
4 Year Old Class (Invitation only)
This class works towards Writhlington apparatus certificates on Bar, Beam, Floor and Rebound. The gymnasts also work towards more advanced skills like handstands and backwards rolls. In these classes we focus much more on refining and perfecting the gymnasts skills ready for moving in to the main gymnastics programme when they start school. This is where we see the gymnasts really start to focus, gaining strength and flexibility along with learning many social skills which can help them at home and school.
We allow a change over time between lessons for parents to briefly speak to their child’s coach if there are any queries regarding their progress.
Pre-School Gymnastics runs throughout the year excluding 2 weeks at Christmas.
